What Is The Purpose Of A Search Engine?


Its actually quite simple understanding the purpose of a search engine when you break down all the parts that make them up.

But before we break it down, lets just define the purpose. Lets paint a quick picture. Imagine that there were no search engines that existed.

You now want to find specific in formation on how to create a website. Keep in mind that there are millions of websites out there that have some sort of content relating to creating a website.

Well, how will you be able to find the information? I'll give you the only way you will be able to get the information. You will have to guess your way through. Really think about this.

Even if you do get a website from time to time, it may not even be relevant to what your actually searching for. This can be a total pain and the internet will actually become an island of information that you will never be able to get to without swimming to it.

Have you tried swimming to an island? Well, allow me share with you the purpose of a search engine. Its main purpose is to find relevant content for you depending on the keyword or phrase that you search for.

But before it can actually get you the information, it needs to do some crawling around the web first. Here are a few key components they use.

Spider Bot A spider bot is a piece of software that crawls the entire internet for information and indexes that information in a database. Remember how may web pages there are out there? Well, this software may not index every single one, but it does get most of them.

SERPs SERPs simply stands for search engine results pages. When you search for something online, your search will come back with a number of web pages to choose from to obtain the desired information. That's what these results are called.

Algorithm An algorithm is basically the guidelines that a search engine uses to determine how well to rank a specific piece of content online. For example. If I have a web page that has to do with creating a website, I must stay completely on topic and show you exactly how to do it. Now, relevancy is only one criteria in the algorithm. There can be much more and it can often change.

Knowing these parts of a search engine may help you understand a little better what you can do to your content for better ranking of your content. Remember, a search engine's sole purpose is to direct you to the most relevant information found on web pages determined by what you are searching for.
